Connected learning stories: Human Society and its Environment

The following stories of successful classroom practice the Human Society and its Environment KLA illustrate a range of approaches and strategies for incorporating information and communication technologies (ICT) into teaching and learning.

ES1 students incorporated the use of a touch-sensitive pad and a commercially available pack of overlays to extend a unit on "the farm".

Stage 2 students rotate around a series of workstations, participating in a range of activities based on the adventure game Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

Computer graphing (pdf - 275kB)

Stage 2 and 3 students from a small rural school collected information and presented it in a variety of graph forms using the program Compute-A-Graph.

The Weather Unit (pdf - 561 kB)

Stage 3 classes engaged in an environmental telecommunication project. They used the Internet to research issues in their own community and contributed findings to other schools engaged in similar projects.

Murder under the microscope (pdf - 225kB)

Stage 3 students learnt about some of the major issues affecting the environment by participating in the environmental Internet project Murder under the microscope.

Streamwatch (pdf - 251kB)

Stage 3 students developed positive environmental attitudes by investigating their local water catchment area and developing an action plan to improve water quality. They measured the water quality and used ICT to record, organise and analyse the results. Email allowed the students access to expert advice in the area.

Exploring ancient cities: An Exhibition

Stages 4, 5, or 6 students organise an exhibition on the daily life of one ancient civilisation. Through the reconstruction of an ancient city and items of daily life, students develop empathy with, and understanding of, an ancient culture.

World War 1

Stage 6 Modern History students use the Internet and Microsoft PowerPoint to complete a research assignment on the major battles of World War I. The task required students to describe the features of the battles, the differences between them, and to evaluate their importance to the outcome of the war.
