Connected learning stories: Science and Technology
The following stories of successful classroom practice the Science and Technology KLA illustrate a range of approaches and strategies for incorporating information and communication technologies (ICT) into teaching and learning.
This stage 3 school story supports the Student Internet project Wet and Wild which is a competition that focuses on major themes related to Australian plants and animals. It is suitable for students in Stages 2, 3 and 4.

Stage 1 and Stage 2 students researched, designed and created web pages so people around the world could learn about Australian animals.
Design, make and appraise (pdf - 287kB)
Students in Stage 1, 2 and 3 used graphics software to develop their ideas and design improved household appliances.
The rivers and lakes project (pdf - 384kB)
Students from Stage 1 to Stage 3 participated in an Internet project to provide an environmental focus that extended their literacy and computer skills.

Stage 2 students participated in the Newsday Student Internet Project as part of a grade-wide unit on news.
Beaches and boats (pdf - 263kB)
Students in Stage 2 and Stage 3 used the Internet to participate in a design competition with students in Stockholm.
Stage 3 students developed positive environmental attitudes by investigating their local water catchment area and developing an action plan to improve water quality. They measured the water quality and used ICT to record, organise and analyse the results. Email allowed the students access to expert advice in the area.

Stage 3 students used the Internet to research issues in their own community and contributed findings to other schools engaged in similar projects using email.
In control of traffic (pdf - 199.9kB)
Stage 3 students created models to represent simple cause-and-effect traffic control systems, built using sensors. The computer was used to control the system.
