Guidelines for overcoming access barriers

  1. Organise information into small, manageable chunks. Aim for small paragraphs that cover one key idea.
  2. Use headings, subheadings, bullets, etc, where possible to break up the information so that it is easier to scan and process.
  3. Be clear and to the point.
  4. Use headings that accurately describe the content.
  5. Use plain English, for example simple sentences, and familiar and precise terms instead of jargon and idiom.
  6. Use inclusive language with examples and illustrations that reflect both genders and a range of cultures and age groups.
  7. Use correct grammar and spelling.
  8. Present key information first, followed by the details.
